How to Make Your Own Natural Doggy Toothpaste
Keeping your dog’s teeth clean doesn’t have to involve expensive store-bought products filled with questionable ingredients. With this simple recipe, you can whip up your very own natural doggy toothpaste at home. Not only will it freshen your dog’s breath, but it will also help prevent plaque build-up and keep their teeth and gums strong and healthy.
Natural Doggy Toothpaste Recipe
What You’ll Need
- 1 beef or vegetable stock cube
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon or dried/fresh parsley
- ½ cup organic coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon water
- Mixing bowl
- Container or jar with a lid
Directions
-
Dissolve the stock cube
Dissolve the beef or vegetable stock cube in the water. The stock adds a tasty flavour your dog will love. -
Mix in baking soda and cinnamon
Add baking soda and cinnamon (or parsley) to the mixture. Baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive, removing plaque and whitening teeth, while cinnamon or parsley helps to freshen your dog’s breath. -
Combine with coconut oil
Add the organic coconut oil and stir until all ingredients are evenly mixed. Coconut oil not only binds the ingredients but also provides natural antibacterial properties. -
Store your toothpaste
Pour the mixture into a clean container or jar, seal it tightly, and store it at room temperature. No refrigeration needed!
Tips for Brushing Your Dog’s Teeth
-
Pick the right moment
Choose a time when your dog is calm, like after a walk or some playtime. For especially anxious dogs, consider using PetCalm, a homeopathic remedy that helps reduce stress.
-
Ease them into it
If brushing is new to your dog, start by letting them lick the toothpaste off your finger. Gradually massage their lips in a circular motion before moving to their teeth and gums.
-
Introduce the toothbrush
Once your dog is comfortable, gently place the toothbrush in their mouth so they can get used to the texture.
-
Use the right technique
Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and brush in small, circular motions. Focus on one area at a time, starting with the upper canine teeth.
-
Go slow
Don’t overwhelm your dog – do as much as they’re comfortable with and gradually increase the number of teeth you brush.
-
Moderation is key
While this toothpaste is safe for your dog, ensure they don’t eat it in large amounts. Too much baking soda or coconut oil can cause issues like electrolyte imbalances or diarrhoea.
-
Finish with a wipe
After brushing, wipe your dog’s teeth with a clean, damp washcloth to remove any leftover toothpaste.
-
Brush regularly
Aim to brush at least two to three times a week. The more consistent you are, the easier it becomes – we promise!
