DIY dog biscuit recipes: Homemade & healthy dog biscuit recipes your dog will love!

Dog biscuits are not cheap! They are also usually jam packed with preservatives, sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. Bake your own dog biscuits for your pooch using natural ingredients – in this way you’ll know exactly what goes into them and you’ll save money too!

Here are 3 easy-to-bake dog biscuit recipes that you can make at home. 

1. Basic dog biscuit recipe

Ingredients:
2 cups of whole wheat flour (substitute with rolled oats, spelt or wheat germ OR a mixture of these if you like)
2 cups of pureed veggies or fruit – use sweet potato, grated carrot or blueberries
1 cup water

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Mix whole wheat flour and ? in a large mixing bowl. Pour in one cup of water and blend until smooth (add more if necessary). Add in the pureed veggies or fruit and mix until all the ingredients are well blended.
3. Roll out the dough to about a ¼ inch thick on a lightly floured surface.
4. Use a cookie cutter to cut into shapes. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place biscuits ½ inch apart.
5. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes.
6. Allow to cool before serving and store in a paper bag – if you store them in an airtight container, they will become soft but still edible.

2. Apple Cheddar Biscuit Recipe

Ingredients
1/2 cup oatmeal
2 cups whole wheat or barley flour
1/3 cup grated cheddar cheese
¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Mix together all the ingredients in a large bowl and add about 3 tablespoons water to form a dough.
3. Roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thick and cut out biscuits with a 3 1/2-inch bone-shaped cookie cutter.
4. Space biscuits 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes until nicely browned and firm.
5. Transfer biscuits to a wire rack. Turn off oven and place biscuits on wire rack in oven overnight. Remove from oven and store in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.

3. Peanut butter PupCakes

This is a sweet way to celebrate your pooch's birthday!  

Ingredients:
1 large egg
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup oats
¼ cup + tablespoons peanut butter
¼ cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup honey or coconut oil
1 cup shredded carrots

Optional: use peanut butter for frosting

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Line a cupcake tin with 6 cupcake liners
3. Combine the egg, peanut butter, oil, honey and grated carrots in a large bowl.
4. Use a separate bowl to combine the flour, baking soda and oats. Add this to the carrot mixture and stir all the ingredients thoroughly together
5. Divide the mixture evenly among the cupcake liners
6. Bake for 15 to 25 minutes – insert a toothpick in the centre to test if they are ready (a few crumbs should come out). The tops should be golden brown
7. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack
8. Ice each cupcake with peanut butter
